My Name is John Suthern and I was born and bred in Canberra, Australia.
My youth was spent both in Canberra and in the bush surrounding Burrinjuck Dam in NSW. My parents had a caravan on the edge of the dam in a park called Woolgarlo.
I always loved painting and at the age of 10 I entered a painting in an international environmental art show, The theme, “Man in Harmony with the Natural World” My entry won me first place and won my school a large prize of books for the library.
I left home at 17 and took up an apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery with a small builder located at Harden in NSW and on completion moved back to Canberra and continued in the building industry. During my 20 years in the building industry I progressed off the tools and into the office becoming a building foreman and successful builder.
Art took a back shelf and really was only used when I drafted a set of plans and needed a promotional front elevation showing a bit of vegetation.
I married my first wife at 21 and we had three great kids 2 boys and a girl. After an illness in 1996 that stopped my life in the building industry and ended my marriage I resumed painting.
I started painting to relieve the boredom at home and at the time I needed to make some presents to give to my family as Christmas was on its way and I was to broke to buy anything for them.
Life has progressed rapidly since then. I have a new wonderful wife and gained another 2 boys. Painting has progressed slowly but I am improving and learning with each new canvas. I have explored other mediums but love painting in oil. |
